Can (2)- Simple

October 10th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh
Jesus was the guru of simple and we who follow HIM have this propensity to make it complex. Grace Community CAN go forward if we keep things simple.
The core of simple is the principle of ONE. Here is how it works:
1. Get one thing from the weekend at Grace.
2. Go to one small group and discuss and plan how to do that one thing.
3.Serve in one ministry at grace with all on your one heart.
4. Do the #1 thing with your money- write a check for 10%.
5. You have one heart, so give it all to GOD…love him with all you have.
Simple.
And you?

Can? (1)- Personal Best

October 8th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Last summer I addressed the question “Can we go forward with our misssion or not” in a series called “The Little Church that Could”.

My conclusion is that we absloutely CAN…if certain faith/actions are in place.

The first is that since church is a collection of individual people focused together, we must deliver our”personal best”. Each of us has a vital part and if we bring it to the table together, we will go forward.

What is yours? Do you need my help getting it started? What team can you be on? Are you on the right team in the right role? Talk to me!

Last week I helped someone get going in a new role at Grace, and she is serving and making a difference with enthusiasm. How about you?

We CAN through Christ who gives us strength.

Porn what?

October 5th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh
All week I have been telling people I meet and interact with about Porn Sunday this week at Grace. I am so enthusiastic about it. I want them there this Sunday. I want them to have help in facing this issue. I want them to find Christ. Its our vision.
Anyway…the first response is typically shock. But in every case, within a few minutes they are nodding and agreeing that church should be about being honest and helpful about a scourge like pornography.
What do you think? How are people around you reacting?

I love this site! (and the gigantic elephant)

October 3rd, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Kudos to TechArts, the team that does all the graphic, sound, staging, videos, etc at Grace. This web site is so cool and helpful. Today I used the verse for the day to get focused, and it really helped my day to get going.

Speaking of today…I am into day 3 of fasting/praying for those who requested prayer for porn probs. I look forward to this “Porn Sunday” at Grace….but I really look forward to a whole bunch of us beginning to confront this gigantic “elephant in the pew”

I’m starving over here!

October 2nd, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Several people asked for prayer this week in the area of porn problems. So I am on a clear liquid fast all week and I am focused at praying for those folks all week. Fasting has this wonderful way of focusing and simplifying my life. Like I am working as usual on pastoral stuff (communication, supporting leads, taking a class, keeping logistics going, prepping for Sunday, getting coached, etc) and all the while there is this inner focus on praying for a few folks who have admitted they struggle with porn.

Do you need help? I will pray for you. dave@findinggrace.com

Going All The Way with Craig

October 1st, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh
Every time I begin to counsel with a couple who are prepping for marriage, I am hugely aware that I need to get a resource to them that will shake this current selfish sensual mindset that is wrecking marriages.
I am just back from OKC and I have a new book from there written by Craig Groeschel…”Going All the Way”. This is what I need. And if you if you are into “preparing for a marriage that goes the distance”, you need it too.
It will be available in a few days…but I tell you what: whoever first comments on this blog, I will give you a copy!

The #1 safegaurd for your life

September 29th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Gordon MacDonald writes eloquently about the primal value of “a happy few”. This is a group of close people who will say anything, help you, challenge you, love you, ask you the difficult questions, stick with you, stretch you etc.

This group is the #1 safegaurd in your life…yet some of us live with out this vital fellowship.

Debbie and I sat in a coffee shop in another city with a woman who has just gone through an ugly divorce and is actively involved on staff at a vibrant church. She was telling us about how her “happy few” are vital in her life. They are not people who simply hold her hand and agree with her. They are ones who challenge and push her to think and change as well.

A guy just called me. He is a 10 hour drive away back in Champaign and he realises that today is one in which he needs a bro to pray for him. So he called and we talked about the Cubs and the beautiful day and about our lives. There was mutual encouragement. I challenged him. I told him to call me anytime today if he needed. It was pretty simple what happened in that 20 minute call, but it is the #1 safegaurd in his life.

Heb 3:13 has these operative words: “encourage one another daily”. Does anyone do that for you?

You gotta burden…a divine burden? Share it!

September 25th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Sounds like there are a bunch around Grace who are discovering their divine burden. A burden that God has placed on their heart to do something about. In many cases, the action steps can be difficult to identify. Well, here is your first action step! Tell us what your divine burden is…right here in the comments section. Tell us the thing that breaks your heart, that makes you angry, you care about that others dont. Don’t wait until you can articulate it perfectly. Instead, just share it from your heart, raw and uncut. Just sharing it with others is a great first step of action, and it is an encouragement for us all to see how God has blessed each of us with a burden.

Tithing is not giving

September 25th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Did that statement Sunday provoke anyone else?

Did the idea that we can actually steal from God make anyone else think twice?

Does the idea that I popped out that if people who consider Grace their church home tithed, we would be in good shape financially…does that seem like a cool possibilty?

Does the biblical deal of the joy that goes to a giver charge you up?

Any stories from what you took in Sunday?

That card in your hand

September 24th, 2007 by Dave Hensleigh

Debbie and I were downtown last Friday and saw several people we knew. One was a young woman we had not seen for years. After visiting for a few minutes, I asked her if she would like to visit Grace…I gave her an invite card for the Blessed* series. She said the timing was good and that she would like to come soon.

Then we walked around the corner, ran into a couple we know and had a similar encounter.

Get this: that little card in your hand is a wonderful way for you to help someone on the path to forgiveness.

Give it to someone today and blog me back your experience.
