I agree witht that interpretation. We have to realize that we cannot "win" on our own. It's only by surrendering to Christ that we can achieve victory.

The best I can come up with is this ...

The king who is outnumbered has to recognize his limitations and seek peace (surrender), which in a way means giving up what he has (which probably includes the right to command his own troops). In the same way, we have to recognize our limitations and surrender, which means giving up what we have (which includes the right to command our own lives).

May be an incorrect interpretation. Anyone else?

Help me here. How does this story:
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

...make this point:
33In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

I don't get the connection. Is there something I am not get about giving up everything?
