2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;

One of the things I have experienced fully from my little hobby of backpacking is darkness. The darkest night of all was one summer night years ago on the back side of Yosemite with our son Wil. No moon, four hours down a rocky trail, flap tired, hungry. cold, discouraged...darkness at its darkest.
When you are truly in the dark, you long for any light, any hope, any direction, any warmth.
I will never forget the little spec of light we finally saw at about 11:30p that night. It was a GREAT light.
